About the Artist

Kaelin Bird is a Jindabyne-based artist and photographer whose passion for creativity began at a young age. Her artistic journey was nurtured during her time at St Patrick's Parish School in Cooma, where she was fortunate to be guided by the late Sabina Kovats—a dedicated mentor who recognised Kaelin’s natural talent, even as she worked through personal challenges.

Now 30+, Kaelin honours the legacy of “Miss Kovats” by continuing to develop her craft and explore new artistic expressions. Her current work blends her signature background colour techniques with the rich traditions of Aboriginal dot painting. This fusion creates striking visual effects, with her pieces interacting beautifully with light and shadow to reveal ever-changing textures and depth.

In addition to painting, Kaelin is passionate about landscape photography, capturing the natural beauty of the Snowy Mountains and surrounding regions. Her photographs often inspire her paintings, and vice versa—each medium offering a different way to express her deep connection to the land and its shifting moods.

Artist’s Statement

“Art gives me a way to express the emotions and experiences I sometimes struggle to put into words. Each painting or photo is a part of my story—a moment, a feeling, or a reflection of the world around me. I am especially drawn to colour and texture, and how these elements can shift with light to create new meaning. I’ve recently been experimenting with dot painting as a way to connect with deeper traditions and add rhythm to my work. I also find inspiration through landscape photography, where the vast skies and alpine light of the Snowy Mountains speak to me.

Painting and photography both give me purpose, and I hope my art brings others joy, inspiration, or a quiet moment of connection.”
